Hell is a place with many
sub-sections to it. In all, hell has 5 compartments. Hell can be
spoken of as a whole entity, but usually the Bible specifies where in hell
it is talking about. This can be
proven when you go back to the Greek scriptures. There are 5 Greek
words used when the original scriptures are talking about hell, but the
English versions of the Bible usually only translate it as one word: "hell".
So, although the translation isn't wrong, per se, the translation could be
better, as I see it. Let's begin.
The first section of hell is called Tartarus, which
comes from the Greek "ταρταρώσος" (2 Peter 2:4). This place is
a prison for fallen angels who sinned before the flood of Noah.
No human beings or demons ever go there anymore. Greek literature (not
biblical, but not to be thrown out as complete lies) also describes this
place as being where the Titans and other powerful creatures make their
dwelling.
The second section is called paradise, the Greek is "παραδείσω"
(Luke 23:43), and this is the place where righteous dead stayed before
Jesus' first coming. They were held captive here by Satan because
Jesus had not conquered death yet. After He died on the cross and
opened the way for gentiles, conquering death, Jesus went to paradise and
took all the souls from there with Him when He ascended to Heaven (Ephesians 4:8).
Hades/Hell is the third part of hell. In Greek,
it is "’άδες" (Matthew 16:18). The Hebrew calls it sheol-hades
which is almost literally translated as "the unseen world of hell". This can be related to what you already
believe to be hell, as it is a place reserved for nothing but torment. The wicked dead
have always gone here. After the 1000 year reign of Christ on
Earth (Revelation 20:4) these souls will be reunited with their unglorified
bodies and cast into the lake of fire for all eternity along with Satan and
the rest of the fallen angels.
The Abyss/Bottomless Pit would be the fourth part of
Hell (Romans 10:7). The Greek is "’άβυσσος". This is the
abode of demons and some angelic beings. The 200,000,000 demons
released in Revelation come from this Pit. No human ever has or ever
will go here. The hebrew equivalent is "abaddon" and is translated
into English as "destruction".
The final word translated as hell, unless otherwise
specifically noted, is the Lake of Fire, or "λίμνεν τοù πύρος"
(Revelation 21:8). This is the eternal hell and perdition of fallen
angels and wicked humans. Also referred to as Gehenna (γέεννα).
It must be taken as a literal lake of fire because that is how it is
described in the bible, and that is what the Greek refers to it as well as
the English. There is nothing symbolic about it.
For those of you that have looked up the verses and still
don't believe that Paradise is a part of hell, then please allow me to
explain.
In Ephesians 4:9 Jesus went to preach to the people in paradise, this is
stated as fact in the bible. Jesus went to paradise (Luke
23:43). Also, hell is in the bowels of the earth according to Ezekiel
31:14 ("nether parts of the earth".) Now, if you read the verse
Matthew 12:40, Jesus went to the bowels of the earth, everything falls in place. To lay it out nice and neat,
follow below:
Jesus went to
paradise to save lost souls, after dying on the cross;
Hell is in
the nether parts of the earth;
Jesus went to
the bowels of the earth.
Paradise
is in the bowels of the earth, thus making it a part of hell!
